On the role of linear transport infrastructures for biodiversity
COHNECS-IT is the acronym for “longitudinal COnnectivity and Habitat potential of green verges depending on their Nature, spEcies and the Context: a Systematic review on Transport Infrastructures”.
The question asked here is whether linear transport infrastructures, considered longitudinally, can have a role of ecological corridor or habitat for biodiversity, through their verges. The first studies that have been reviewed suggest that this role exists, but mostly for generalist species, for species with significant moving abilities or in artificialized locations (dense urban zones, locations of intensive agriculture, etc.). Besides, making linear transport infrastructures attractive to biodiversity can also have negative consequences, such as collisions.
Practical outcomes of the project can be important, for helping managers to improve their practices or for prioritizing restoration and compensation ecological measures. Knowledge gaps and methodological weaknesses / strenghts will also be identified during the conduct of the project.
